LAB/OR8 brings to you our bi-monthly podcast, where we sit down to
talk with guests, connect with the community and celebrate the creative
heart of North Northumberland. We want to shine a light on the
musicians, artists and writers helping to shape the region’s culture - from
Berwick to it’s surrounding coastlines.

Hosted by local musicians and sound engineers Bodhi Turnbull and
James Sanderson, the episodes feature honest conversations, live
sessions, and behind-the-scenes insights into their creative process.
Everything is up for discussion, from the local music scene, arts and
festivals, to the creative projects and people making waves across North
Northumberland.

But we are more than just a podcast. LAB/OR8 is a platform.
An ecosystem thriving on discovering new voices, sharing ideas, and
celebrating the creativity growing across our region.

Based in the heart of Berwick, The Straw Yard has quickly become one of the town’s most influential creative spaces. A place where music, theatre, art, and community all come together. Ben, Oli, Alice and their team have built a strong relationship with the local cultural scene, supporting independent artists and providing opportunities to create, perform, and connect.

What makes The Straw Yard stand out is the atmosphere the team have created around it. It’s not just somewhere to ‘attend’; it’s a genuine community, where collaboration is encouraged, emerging creatives are nurtured, and the freedom to experiment with new ideas is of paramount importance. From intimate gigs and theatre productions to workshops and spoken word events, there’s always something happening that reflects the growing creative energy here in Berwick.

In Episode 2 of LAB/OR8 Podcast, Ben Humphrey and Oli Brooks from The Straw Yard sit down with us and talk about how the venue came to life; the challenges of running an independent arts space, and why creating opportunities for local artists is so important to them.
